What To Expect at Your First Pointe Shoe Fitting

Getting your first pair of pointe shoes is a milestone unlike any other. At Stage Center, we want to ensure your first fitting is as magical and comfortable as possible. To help you step onto the platform with confidence, we’ve gathered the essential tips you need to know before you arrive. Here is your guide to a successful first fitting.

Pointe Shoe Anatomy

How Should Pointe Shoes Fit?

A precise fit is the foundation of both safety and artistry on pointe. When you arrive for your fitting at Stage Center, we look for a "second skin" feel. The shoe must be snug enough to prevent the foot from sliding within the satin, as any internal movement can lead to friction and injury. The box should provide a firm, supportive compression—comparable to a steady handshake—ensuring the metatarsals are held securely without overlapping. Finally, the heel contour should remain flush against the foot; any excess fabric or "bagging" indicates a length or profile mismatch that can compromise your alignment.

Book a Pointe Shoe Fitting Appointment

It is advised that you call ahead of time to make an appointment for your fitting or schedule online. A pointe shoe fitting is a thorough process and requires a generous amount of time (approximately 30-45 minutes). Scheduling an appointment will allow our staff to coordinate with your specific needs and instructor requirements. This information helps us prepare everything needed to find your perfect pair!

What Should I Wear?

The only thing we ask is that you wear comfortable clothing, you will be asked to tendu, and plie throughout the fitting. No baggy pants. Your fitter needs to be able to see your feet! If you plan on wearing tights to your fitting, please wear convertible tights so your fitter can assess bare your feet. Speaking of bare feet, make sure your toenails are trimmed! You will be bearing all your weight on the tips of your toes. Long toenails will cause pain or pressure while en pointe.

Communication is Key!

Your feedback is the most important tool we have during a fitting. Expect a detailed session where your fitter will ask for your thoughts on the feel and support of various styles to ensure the best outcome. We also highly encourage inviting your instructor to join the appointment. Their unique insight into your technique and strength adds an invaluable layer of expertise to the session—plus, it’s a wonderful way to celebrate this milestone together.

If they cannot attend, please ensure your instructor approves the fit before you sew your ribbons or wear the shoes in class. If you sew, wear, or alter the shoes in anyway we cannot take them back if your instructor does not like the shoes.
